Summer Camp Registration and Forms - PAYMENT DUE ON SUNDAY!

Summer Camp registration is now open and you can receive the early bird discount IF paid in full by 6 pm on Sunday, May 19, 2013.

If you plan to participate in summer camp, now is the time to start planning for annual physicals and for completing all required forms. Refer to the Summer Camp registration information for details. Forms are due to the Summer Camp Registrar (Mrs Quincy) no later than Sunday, June 23rd at 5:00 pm.

Flag Etiquette

According to the United States Code Title 36 Chapter 10:

§171. Conduct during playing the national anthem
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.
§172. Pledge of allegiance to the flag; manner of delivery
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.
§177. Conduct during hoisting, lowering or passing of flag
The flag should be raised briskly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. To place the flag at half staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it to a position half way between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag is to be raised again to the peak for a moment before it is lowered.

The flag of the United States of America is saluted as it is hoisted and lowered. The salute is held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the last note of music, whichever is the longest.

When carried in a procession, the flag should be to the right of the marchers. When other flags are carried, the flag of the United States may be centered in front of the others or carried to their right. When the flag passes in a procession, or when it is hoisted or lowered, all should face the flag and salute.

§174. Time and occasions for display
The flag is typically displayed only between sunrise and sunset. It should be illuminated if displayed at night.

On Memorial Day the flag is displayed at half staff until noon and at full staff from noon to sunset.

The Troop will be marching in the Memorial Day Parade. Fulfill your Scout Oath and register to march with the troop.

Zipline Campout Registration Now Open - thru Saturday, May 11.

NOTE SCHEDULE CHANGE: Catamount cannot accomodate our group on Saturday. Therefore, we will be going to Catamount on Sunday morning. PLC is currently working on plans for the day on Saturday.

Registration for the Zipline campout is now available online. The fee is partially subsidized by the troop from fundraisers - so sell those pancake breakfast tickets.

All Zipline participants must fill out an online waiver form, print out the form, sign it, and give it to Mr Quinlavin or Mr Iken.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Pancake Breakfast a Success!

Thank you to Mr Andronowitz and his family for all of their work organizing the pancake breakfast. Thanks, also, to all of the parents and adult leaders who took the time to help out. Great job by all of the scouts who sold tickets and worked at the pancake breakfast.

Pancakes - Have you Signed Up and Sold Tickets?

The annual Pancake Breakfast will be held on Sunday, May 5, serving food from 8:00-12:00. Uniform is the Class B (red) Shirt and Scout Pants.

Sign-up is now open. All scouts are expected to sign up for a shift to help with this fundraiser. Each scout is also expected to sell at least six tickets - which you should have received in the mail two weeks ago.

Parents are also needed to help prepare food.

The money earned at this fundraiser is used to pay for awards, camp permits, equipment, administrative expenses, and other expenses. The fundraiser reduces costs that would otherwise be passed on to the scouts. Successful fundraisers require the continued efforts of all scouts and their parents in the troop. For parents who don’t like to camp, this fundraiser provides an excellent opportunity to participate in a scouting event and help the troop.
